Tactical Strength Challenge @ The Cell

Posted by The Cell on June 3rd, 2009

The Tactical Strength Challenge (TSC) is a strength competition consisting of three events:

  • A three-attempt powerlifting deadlift
  • Pullups for max reps
  • Kettlebell snatches for max reps in a 5:00 time period

Purpose
The purpose of the TSC is to test absolute strength (deadlift), bodyweight-relative strength (pullups), and cardiovascular endurance (kettlebell snatches). The three events test a unique trade-off between these abilities. Heavier participants have an advantage in the deadlift, lighter participants have an advantage in pullups. The kettlebell snatch tests all participants more or less equally.

Classes of Competition
We are running with 4 Divisions.

  1. The Men’s Elite Division uses a max deadlift, pullups with 10kg of added weight (22 lbs), and snatches with a 32kg kettlebell.
  2. The Men’s Novice Division uses a max deadlift, bodyweight pullups, and snatches with a 16kg kettlebell.
  3. The Women’s Open Division uses a max deadlift, bodyweight pullups, and snatches with a 16kg kettlebell.
  4. The Women’s Novice Division uses a max deadlift, bodyweight pullups, and snatches with a 12kg kettlebell.

There are no weight classes, since the different events variously favour heavier or lighter competitors by design.

When: Saturday 20th June 2009, 12.30pm
Who: The Cell Tactical Strength Challenge is only open to The Cell Members
Entry Fee: $5.00
Prizes will be awarded to the winners of each Division

To enable everyone to take part we can scale the pullups with the use of bands. A scoring system will ensure all competitors are on a level playing field.

hmmm i wonder if i can get a couple of pull ups by then hahaha

  2. Pete Yeates says:

Hey GusMan – I looked up the rules for the TSC from tacticalstrengthchallenge.com and it appears that the pull-ups have to be from a dead hang with palms facing away and no kipping, hope this helps with your preparation. :)

” A chinup grip, with the palms facing the lifter, is not allowed; the palms must face away. The grip may be thumbless or not, but most competitors find they do best with a thumbless grip.

For pullups, the competitor will approach the bar, grasp it with both hands, and settle into a dead hang with both arms fully straightened. (Competitors may initially stand on a block or box in order to reach the bar.) After settling into a dead hang, the competitor will pull with both arms, using no kipping or swinging, and pull up until the neck or the chest cleanly touches the bar. The competitor will then lower back to a dead hang and do another rep.

The set is terminated when the competitor quits or fails to make three successive attempts. “

  9. Pete Yeates says:

Adam, congrats on the DL Pb’s mate, I looked up the International April results for the TSC and out of 19 people in the Elite division, you would have placed 14th.

  10. inez says:

    wow adam ur a machine

  11. inez says:

how do we do the KB snatches..? issit alternating arm? must each arm perform the same number of reps?

Awesome effort from those who participated today.

    PB’s everywhere.
Gus, Luke and Michelle pulled Deadlift PB’s
Luke PB’d in the pull ups
Inez, your deadhang pull ups are insane! 15 reps!! That’s an amazing effort.
A bit of coaching before hand and everyone smashed out plenty of snatches too.

Great stuff guys and congrats to Luke and Michelle for taking out top honours.

    Jase

  18. gus says:

had a really great time, guys! love the cell for events like this

even though i had to use a band for pull ups, loved just participating

    results:
deadlift – 135kg (pb)… pulled 130 in the cft then tried for 140. tried for that lift again and failed but did lock in a pb at least

pull ups – red band – 12. happy with the result but looking forward to being band free

16kg KB snatch in 5mins – 91 reps. really happy with the result as kb snatches were a struggle recently and i really feel an improvement here

after: little creatures for time. possibly not the best after workout choice, but these things happen haha

  19. michelle says:

Thanks, again, for organising this, Stef and Jase. It was heaps of fun!

Deadlift: 112.5kg PB …….. with terrible form – my back is stiff as today :( Will need to work on this before I do anymore heavy lifts

Pull-ups: 7 with red band. Great encouragement from everyone, I probably would have called it quits after 5 without it.

    12kg KB snatch – 139 reps in 5 min.

It was great to meet you, Inez – I am in awe of your pull ups!!!
